How best can you explain that "an Orange is a Fruit, but not all Fruits are Oranges. Consider it as right to conclude that “A Blog is a Website, but not all Websites are Blogs”.

But when we look at the stiff argument mostly borne out of deep misunderstanding of the subject, we see there is need to elaborate the differences between blog and website.

Now the question, is a blog a website or is a website a blog?

Recently, some folks have asked about what the difference between a blog and a website is. Altogether, very many people, beginners especially, have asked the same question.

Although the answer abound all over the internet, I will like to post my opinion here, specially for my readers.

Bear in mind, if you are thinking about starting a blog or a creating a website, or taking advantage of techjara free blog/website service, you no doubt need to identify the differences between a blog and a website. This way you’d know what you really want out of the web business.

We are often asked by beginners about what is a blog, and how is it different from a website? If you are thinking about starting a blog or a website, then understanding these terms will help you meet your goals. In this beginner’s guide, we will explain what is a blog and how is it different from a traditional website.

Despite the fact that the Blogging is a term that is so widely searched for around the internet, very many still get into some trouble differentiating or connecting these two (Blog and Website). There are several basic differences between the two.

First and foremost, it is right to note that these two are used to publish our content for online users. They however, carries different purposes. To answer the question of which one pays more, the simple answer is that they both thrive in a way that depends on the consistency and persistence of the builder/owners.

What is a Blog?

As described in the WordPress codex “Blog” is an abbreviated version of “weblog,” which is a term used to describe websites that maintain an ongoing chronicle of information.

blog and website

A blog is a short form of We(b log). Can you connect it? That is Blog. It is like saying log on the web (weblog). This is also different from a Vlog (which is Video log – a blog in which the postings are primarily in video form). A blog is a type of website. It can form a part of a website which supposed to be updated with new content from time to time. This is why it is termed as not static like a Website is.

With the above factors, some may still not understand the uniqueness.

There are several noticeable reasons why blog is different from website. I want to quickly mention some basic identification of blogs. It is characterized by constant content upload. Hence, the more content uploaded, the more popularity it gathers and the more strength it gains.

Let us checkout some basic facts and identification of a blog.

Commenting system that welcomes readers

A Blog provides a commenting system. It allows readers to air their views and share opinion as well as render and receive support on issues around a post. This is a strategy for actually growing a list and audience because while readers communicate, they build likeness and trust for the blog.

Chronological or reverse chronological listing of Posts

Another area of identifying that your website is a blog is the chronological arrangement or listing of the blog posts. There is a feature called “posts“. What you are reading now is a post. Every post have its own page (as the url suggests), but the main page (homepage) of the blog is dedicated to the series of latest posts in reverse-chronological (latest to oldest) order.

Well arranged by archived

Take a look at a typical blog site, you would see that it is characterized by publishing date, author of the post or blog, post category(ies), tags and some times sub-categories. This differentiates it from a website.

Really Simple Syndication (RSS)

If you are a regular blog post reader, you’d have come across RSS. This is  short form for ‘Really Simple Syndication’ feeds for posts and/or comments for feed-readers like Feedly, etc.

Subscription System

Blog offers a subscription system which creates an avenue for blog owners to reach out to their viewers/readers. They send free email newsletters from time to time, for readers reading pleasures and successes. This way, they keep in touch and become more popular. This is one factor that has contributed immensely to some become authorities in their respective niche.

Can be managed by individual Author

Most Blogs are managed by individual author or a team of authors often called the editorial board. However, a blog can be single-handedly controlled by one author.

You actually do not need a big team to manage a blog. This is one reason why blogs have become the best source of online earning for enthusiastic people who love to share their knowledge with the rest of the world. I started this blog all alone and I am running it for over 8 years without a big team.

Blogs are generally more informally presented to the visitors. The language used is often much simpler than on websites. Blog does not require heavy use of English terms or language. It can be created with any form of language, depending on location.

An Orange is a Fruit, but not all Fruits are Oranges, so is it right to conclude that “A Blog is a Website, but not all Websites are Blogs”

What is a Website?

According to wikipedia, a website is website is a collection of related web pages, including multimedia content, typically identified with a common domain name, and published on at least one web server.

On the other hand, a website is simply referred to as site on the web (a content home – site, on the web. A website is a static site. It is unlike the blog, which is dynamic in nature. This is so, in the sense that while the former displays content of static nature (not changing readily), the later has its contents on rotational or continuous changing. It contents changes as new ones are posted with time.

Examples of websites

We can see website as a term used for everything that takes the form of a web page online. Be it an ecommerce site (jumia, konga, ebay, amazon, Alibaba etc); social media network (facebook, twitter, instagram, etc); Forum/membership sites (stackoverflow, google forums, quora, Nairaland etc). Everything that exists and operates on the internet is a website.

The mother term given to all sites that you surf online is referred as Website. This also include the blogs. So, without mincing words, the website most usually comes with diverse format and formality direction, operated in a more professional way than the blog.

Website is a static site. It carries front page details of the entire site and may remain the same way for a long time, while showcasing a product and service. While a blog contains a comment form, a website does not; while posts are arranged chronologically or reverse-chronological form, a website is not. It is a static page.

Similarities between a Blog and a Website

However as the case may be, the blog and website have a single similarity. This is that they are both connected online, used to showcase products and services. Both a website and a blog exist on the internet with web addresses each. Both of them are hosted on similar hosting services to make information remain online.

They both target a specific audience and they both contain links, pictures, videos etc. They also both requires hard work if you’re going to make something real out of it. Why the high increase in Blog than website, the big question would be, which would you rather consider to start now?

Hosting a blog and website

Both blog and website can be hosted with powerful hosting companies like Bluehost, Dreamhost, Siteground, HostGator, GoDaddy, etc.

I recommend BlueHost

[bha size=’760×80′ variation=’01’ align=’none’]

or DreamHost

You can chose a trusted host depending on what kind of platform you are intending to build. See our guide on how to install wordpress using any of the host with cpanel.

You can surely increase the number of authors on a blog to publish content more frequently. Large corporate blogs have no more than 10-15 bloggers on its editorial board, who publish content regularly. Very many of the blogs today are built on wordpress.

Blogging does not require all the technical knowledge of web development to build, unlike building a website. Although most websites owners today, have considered building on Content Management Softwares like WordPress. Neither do you need to have acquired the ability to use web hosting or FTP to start it.

You can simply create a free blog on wordpress using the guide on this website. Free blogging platforms like Blogger, WordPress, Tumblr are here on the rescue. With the availability of blogging platforms, you can easily start a blog and earn a living through that, all without the problem of coding.

Like the popular saying, also quoted above, An Orange is a Fruit, but not all Fruits are Oranges, so is it right to conclude that “A Blog is a Website, but not all Websites are Blogs”.

This best help us to differentiate the two of them. In case you are confused about these two, let me know. You can use the comment box below.  I will be here to give further clarification on the differences and similarities. Feel free to join in the discussion, let’s reason together.
